Namkhyung Maha Maya School was established in 2008. At present, our monastic school has over 350 students—250 young monks and 100 young nuns. Following the national curriculum, they study Tibetan, English, Nepali, Mathematics, Science, and Computer Science from Grades One to Eight. Our monks and nuns consistently rank highest in the province in government examinations.
These secular studies provide our monastics with a strong academic foundation, which proves invaluable when they begin their study of Buddhist scripture at the monastic college (shedra). They also equip them to relate the Buddha’s teachings thoughtfully to modern science and other fields of secular knowledge. In the future, these studies will enable our monks and nuns to share the Buddha’s teachings in multiple languages and to bring them into meaningful dialogue with science and contemporary thought.
Ultimately, we aim to prepare our monastics to contribute to social harmony and world peace through the authentic preservation and propagation of the Buddhadharma. With a firm grounding in both modern and traditional Buddhist education, we aspire for our monks and nuns to embody the profound and timeless teachings of the Buddha and thus become exemplary members of society.
